My passport expires 6/22. Just read that you must submit your current passport to renew online. Fine but I’m going to St Lucia at end of March. Do I wait till I get back to renew, leaving me only a couple of months for renewal process?

Pretty sure your passport has to be valid for minimum 6 months beyond your exit date of said country.

Mine expired in 2017. Got it renewed online a few months ago. I think if it hasn’t passed 15 years since the issue date, you are still eligible to renew. Paid for expedited service. Got the new passport in 5 weeks.

It’s recommended

I went to DR in November and my passport expires in a week.

Nobody said a word about it

Wants the point of it having an expiration date if it’s not good for the last 6 months?

I agree 100%. I also don’t make the rules. There is a good reason for the rule. I’d rather be safe than sorry though. My wife had a similar instance before a trip to Greece and I made hee drive to the passport office in Hot Springs. Was a weight off my shoulder for sure.

Every country has different rules, but St Lucia is one that requires a passport be valid for 6 months past departure date.

Your best bet is to send it in ASAP for renewal, and pay the extra for expedited service. I did this recently and turnaround time was about 3-4 weeks. It’s your best bet…

I don’t think it’s “recommended” but you may have gotten lucky. I’ve seen first hand someone unable to get on a plane to Portugal because their passport expired in 2-3 months. They had to miss the first few days of the trip waiting for a new passport.

We just went through this with my daughter's passport. Expired in April 2022, but we were going to Europe in December. She ended up having to have her US Senator set up an appointment and drive 5 hours to Seattle to the closest processing center. Got it on the spot.

It doesn't matter what the incoming country requires. It matters only about US requirements getting back into the country. There's a risk the airline turns you away. Never know.

When traveling to the USA, the general rule is to have a passport that is valid for at least six months after the planned time of return.

Passport: Apply several months in advance for a new passport. If you already have one, it should be valid for at least six months after you return home and have two or more blank pages, depending on your destination. Otherwise, some countries may not let you enter.

And don't forget COVID protocols. St. Lucia.
