No clue what you are talking about as we did not have any issues leaving Mexico nor did we pay a tax to depart.
Believe Visitax is only in Quintana Roo. You wouldn't have to worry about it in CDMX, Oaxaca, etc.

I’ll add to the concept of paying with pesos in Mexico. Years ago it was easy to spend US dollars and maybe some people preferred it. But it takes time and fees to convert the dollars back to pesos for use by the recipients. I agree with the atm idea or even bringing pesos if your bank can do that. Just make sure the atm you use isn’t a kiosk that could be compromised. I try to go to legit banks and just pay the few bucks in atm fees instead of risking a scam atm. You will waste precious vacation time and probably lose a bit if you bring USD and try to convert it there.

I'll piggyback and say, unless you are at a resort, use pesos wherever possible. If using pesos, be sure to go to a bank ATM (i.e. BBVA, Banorte, Santander) and do not accept the ATM's conversion. Chances are, your US bank will be much cheaper.
