Toronto - Barberian steakhouse and Gusto 101. Enjoyed this city.
Pittsburgh - one of the best venues in baseball. Alla Famiglia restaurant for dinner
Cleveland - only thing I enjoyed was Lola Bistro, Michael Symon's place.

Did this trip in 09'
Pittsburgh -> Canton (NFL HOF) -> Akron (LeBron HS) -> Cleveland -> Ann Arbor -> Detroit
Pittsburgh,PA - hidden gem, still one of the best baseball backdrops. Fun ballpark. (we lucked out and saw the stros v Pirates then after a little band called Zac Brown Band played. Spent $27 dollars on a ticket. Still one of the best $27 spent + Firework show, lol)
University of Pitt's campus is great as well to check out...
Canton, OH - Pit stop between Pitt and Cleveland to see the NFL HOF.
Akron, OH - Lebron's HS/soap box racing/Goodyear
Cleveland, OH - Rock N Roll HOF
Ann Arbor, MI - Michigan Campus, Big HOUSE.
Detroit, MI -
Of all of spots Detroit was pretty rough... Cleveland as well was a dud. Not a great time to travel to Detroit and Cleveland during 2009..oofff. Not sure how Toronto works in this trip.. but nice father/son trip for sure. Plenty of Memories to be had.
I'd recommend possibly ending in Chicago...could pass through South Bend and check out ND campus + a game in CHI. Prob easier to fly back to wherever you are traveling from as well.

I did Cincinatti, Cleveland and Pittsburg last year. My regret is not taking time to do football hall of fame, and right by pittsburg is the United 93 memorial. All I got

In Pittsburgh, I’d stay downtown. I really enjoyed the walk across Roberto Clemente Bridge to the game. Not sure on budget, but there’s a Renaissance right next to the bridge. There are a couple more moderately priced places on the stadium side of the river and you can always just walk across it before the game. Great stadium, and the people in Pittsburgh are fabulous. LOVE their city, which is always good to see.
Lot of restaurants in the Strip District. Pamela’s Diner is a popular breakfast place. Son may enjoy the Heinz History Museum right by the Strio District. Part of the outfield wall from Forbes Field is cool to see near Carnegie Mellon. Not walking distance from downtown, but that whole area is cool.

For Pittsburgh, I would stay somewhere downtown (there are plenty of options). The "T" (light rail) is free between Downtown and North Side. PNC Park is off the North Side station, but if your hotel is close enough to the Allegheny, I recommend walking over the Roberto Clemente Bridge. IIRC entire bridge is closed off to traffic on game days
If you're into animals, the Aviary is very nice. Strip District has a lot of good, inexpensive food and ethnic food stores. Penn Mac is the most extensive Italian store I've been to.
Definitely go up to Mt Washington. You can drive or take one of two inclines.
Since you're both obviously baseball fans, over at the Pitt campus you can see the remnants of Forbes Field. It's just a wall but interesting imo.
Food wise, I have no idea what's even still open anymore. I rarely make it downtown these days but I know a few of my favorite places are closed now. Primanti Brothers is the icon though. The one in the strip district is the original but there's another in Market Square near PPG place

Between Cleveland and Detroit spend a day in Sandusky and go to Cedar Point. Teenagers love the roller coasters

Buddy’s pizza for Detroit style deep dish. Take the kid to The Henry Ford museum if he likes history. Belle isle if the weather is nice. Check out Ann Arbor too.

Oh yeah
For Pittsburg. Definitely stay downtown. Your son is 13, does he like Batman? Watch the last Batman from Christopher Nolan before you go. All downtown Pitt.
Bring a lock like the one you would use on a school locker. You and your son can put one on Clemente bridge if you do stuff like that.

I really enjoyed my Detroit trip. This museum is a must! One of the best museums in the US. It started as a display of Henry Ford and Thomas Edison’s combined collections. Along with all types of historic automobiles and electronics you will find the chair Lincoln was assassinated in along with his suit and items in his pockets. Also they have the vehicle Kennedy was assassinated in. Motown records museum is also in Detroit.
As far as downtown I never felt unsafe. There is a historic entertainment district called Greektown. There are restaurants, nightlife and a casino in that section of town. Probably more appropriate in the daytime with your son.
When I was there they were completely renovating the streetscape of their main corridor Woodward Ave. Depending on how much you want to walk you can walk from the riverfront to the stadium on this road.
The baseball stadium, football stadium and hockey arena are all together so there is a good many sports bars/restaurants right there at the stadium. Detroit oddly is known for Coney dogs restaurants. Literally coney dog restaurants next to each other sharing the same wall.

Cleveland perhaps consider Science Museum next to Rock n Roll HOF, not sure on Kid's interests. Lots of good restaurants around stadium. Cleveland will be enjoyable. I second the Cedar Point comment but may not be open yet. Maybe drive through or hike in Cuyahoga Valley NP.
