lol, that is not a sketchy area at all. At least by Memphis standards. But I agree with you and others it was my favorite bbq and better than the overrated Central.

If you want to stay downtown, you have a lot of folks giving you good advice about the Peabody, etc. If safety is your top concern. Absolutely stay in Germantown. You can get to Graceland in 15-20 minutes and you will not have to worry about anything safety wise.

My wife is an extreme Elvis fan. I have to play Elvis songs just to get her in the mood.

We have been to Graceland several times. If you want to have the entire Elvis experience, stay at The Guest House at Graceland. Nice hotel run by the estate. The Elvis museum across the street from Graceland is massive. Also, do the tour at Sun Studio.

Whatever you do, do NOT go to the Walmart (or anywhere else) on Elvis Presley Blvd. Made that mistake on our first trip to Graceland.
