I haven't been to either; a work trip in late-October, with a colleague (who has never been to Asia, but is not a weenie either).
BOTTOM LINE: one night or two in Macau? (or, unlikely, three?)

More Details:
We land HKG on a Saturday afternoon, and have that evening free, and all of Sunday in Hong Kong. Then Monday through Thursday working in HK, with evenings more or less free. And we might even get done Wednesday and have all of Thursday free.

Friday early, we leave for one day's work in Macau, and I definitely want to stay there Friday night.

My Q is:
- do we plan to do Macau Friday evening and most of Saturday, and head back to Hong Kong Saturday evening?
OR
- spend Friday and Saturday nights in Macau?

His flight back to USA is Monday morning from HKG (10th/11th day of trip). Mine is that afternoon

Macau can be done in a day since it is a tiny island even if you like to gamble. I recommend adding a day trip to Lantau Island to see the Big Buddha. You can take a cable car up to the Buddha that has mesmerizing views of the island. Some people also hike to the Buddha. There are also lovely beaches. While I enjoyed seeing Macau, I wish I had spent more time on Lantau.

ETA: We stayed on Kowloon and did day trips. Much easier than lugging luggage around in a crowded city.

My two cents...24 hours in Macau is more than enough. It has lost lots of its Portuguese influence, but still worth it.

Two Saturday nights in Hong Kong > 7 nights in Macau.

Agree on Big Buddha.

And pay extra for the hyrdrofoil back and forth to Macau.

Sunday is a fun day in Macau because all of the house staffs (mainly Filipinos) are out and about because they do not work that day. So pubs, picnics, etc are all rocking that day.

Please do a trip report afterwards. I’ll be heading to HK in a few months and planning to take a ride to Macau for a day also.

My wife and I did a day trip to Macau and hated it. We should’ve spent the additional time in HK. We now refer to being duped as “getting macaued.” Nothing special, many run down areas, crowded. They have a few nice streets with Portuguese architecture, but other than that, it wasn’t worth our time.

ETA: our favorite day in HK was Big Buddha and Tai O.

according to online reviews, It seems like a crap shoot that it may be a shite show regarding the ferry ride ordeal. Not sure if it is worth it to get to and from Macau.

Wait, what? The ferry system (to Macau) is a crap-shoot? I want to believe you, but that does not sound like the "modern/efficient" Hong Kong I have always heard about.

Ok, definitely gonna hike the Tian Tan Buddah on Lantau Island on Sunday 10/28. Thank you!

QUESTION: I have a good deal (more or less) on a two-night AirB&B in Wan Chai on Hong Kong Island. I should book there, right?? It is the heart of Hong Kong, right?

Note: our HK business, the prior Saturday through Thursday will be in Kowloon, where our hotel is. Then, Friday night in Macau.

You're welcome. Please report back with how you liked the hike.

Wan Chai is in the business district, close to big indoor malls and Victoria's Peak. If you have a good deal and he place has good reviews, then book the AirB&B. Main thing to consider is safety. I walked all over the business area when I was there, and in Kowloon, too, and I never had any problems.

Another fun thing to do is to take the double-decker local bus (sit at front on top) and go to the Stanley Market. The bus ride was more thrilling than anticipated, and Stanley Market's setting reminded me of a tropical island.

Ferries ran regularly when I was there. Look at the time tables and give yourself a half hour buffer. Bring passport. When I went, we had to go through passport control and received a Macau stamp.

Couple more fun touristy things to do: a) shop for gold on Macau or Kowloon; b) Star Ferry from Kowloon to Hong Kong business district; c) Temple Street Night Market.

And lastly, it was cheap to have clothes dry cleaned, and the service was exceptional.
