I just picked this off of Disneyland post from Dodd.

After you complete Disney, you have plenty of options:
1. Trek down to San Diego for the zoo then stay on Coronado (Hotel Del)
2. Get a hotel on the beach in Orange County (Dana Point area is nice), Balboa or Huntington Beach. Find a nice cove beach (Crescent Bay Beach is my favorite) and relax. Eat at Javier’s in Newport and Mutt Lynchs on Balboa
3. Drive back up to LA and do Universal, Rodeo Drive, LaBrea tar pits, etc
4. Make a drive up to Simi Valley to the Reagan Library
5. There are so many options. I prefer number 2.

Some things I don’t recommend:
-San Diego Gaslsmp district
-Hollywood and Highland
-Downtown LA
-Santa Monica/ Pier
-Legoland

Where would you go and do if you had 2 days to do whatever?

I've been to San Diego already. First trip to LA.

What do you like to do? LA has a lot of different things to do.

Outdoors, nightlife, amusement parks, museums and art, sports, etc?

Me, I like the outdoors and sports. I'd head up the coast and spend a night there if you haven't yet. Central CA coast is beautiful.

I'd try to catch a Lakers or Clippers game too and maybe the Malibu area while heading up the coast. But that's me. You may like different stuff.

If no young kids, I would definitely stay away from LEGOLAND. Not much in Downtown LA to do unless you want to see a play or something. There are good restaurants though. Although a Lakers fan, going to a game is a bit boring. A USC or UCLA basketball game is probably more exciting.
SM Pier is ok but can get pretty crowded but you are walking distance to some of the best restaurants in LA. Plus the SM Promenade has some high end shopping.
If you go to Javier's then you are across the street from Crystal Cove. There's a restaurant/bar on the beach there that is really good.
San Diego Zoo is the best.
There's not much in Hollywood besides run-away teen druggies and homeless.
There are a bunch of breweries in the South Bay.
Manhattan Beach or Hermosa are great beach towns to walk around with good restaurants and bars.

Gaslamp district is good for bar hopping only, and is good for someone looking to party.

Hollywood is a huge tourist trap. It sucks. Avoid at all costs.

Downtown LA is whatever and can mostly be skipped. As with SD gaslamp, there are a lot of bars there, so maybe it’s worth a trip for someone looking to bar hop. The more expensive bars and clubs are generally elsewhere.

SM Pier is next to the promenade and just north of Venice beach. It’s the one area of LA I’d recommend not skipping. Good mix of culture and touristy stuff.

Legoland is for kids. Never been, so can’t comment.

There’s a lot of happy hour happenings because of all the big offices and professionals that work down there. At night the bar scene is decent. It’s not pretentious like Hollywood. There are some mostly lower budget nightclubs too (if that’s your thing).

632627, taking a trip out to SOCAL with the wife and our toddler for a week. We plan on hitting little Tokyo downtown LA, Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Disneyland, La Jolla, and the San Diego zoo. Does this sound like a decent plan?

Sounds solid. I haven’t been to little Tokyo in forever, so can’t comment much on it. I remember olvera Street down in that area being pretty cool to spend an afternoon (although I haven’t been down there in forever either).

My biggest recommendation is to skip Hollywood, as it’s a complete shite show. And I think Disney and universal on the same trip is somewhat redundant, with Disney being better. As such, your itinerary looks good.

If you are still looking for a beach hotel in Orange County, the Inn at Laguna Beach is nice and was not terribly expensive.
