For anyone experienced and familiar with camping in Arkansas. I’m looking to take the family camping - me, wife, 10 and 12 year old kids. Would prefer to camp out of the truck, but not opposed to a short to moderate hike or kayak trip.

The only 2 things I’m looking for in an ideal scenario are:
-not be in crowded areas or too close to other people
-access to rivers/recreational waterways, etc.

Any guidance would be a big help. I know Arkansas has a ton of sites and it’s a bit overwhelming to pick the right place.

TIA.

Buffalo River, specifically the Buffalo Point Campground. You'll still have water and electricity at the site, but they're spread out a bit.

There are a bunch of canoe/kayak outfitters just down the road. The town of Jasper is about 30 minutes away when you need to resupply.

What time of year do you want to go? Many of the rivers are run off dependent and may not have much flow.

If summer time:
Ouachita River - River Bluff or dragover

Kings river- kings river outfitters

Mulberry river - turners bend

Check the Caddo river to see if it is still high enough for paddling. Glenwood has a few canoe rental places.
If you want to be away from other people then Shady lake is a great spot. Great hike up to Tall Peak that the kids can handle.
Both of these are just west of Hot Springs in the Ouchita's.
Little Missouri River area has some of the best hiking trails around. Same area.

My grandsons and I camped on the Little Red River just below the dam near Heber Springs in April last year. I would go back there when it’s too hot to camp elsewhere. That water is cold and keeps the air around you cooler too. You can camp with a tent, truck, RV or travel trailer.

Camping below the Norfork dam and do some trout fishing, the water is cold enough you’ll need a light jacket in the morning on the river.

Last weekend the Caddo River was at 6.2 and falling, probably still plenty of water to float though, and generally not too many people.

Caddo, is also perfect for kids, nice and easy but still fun. Makes for a great day for parents not having to worry about it getting too crazy.

Kyle's Landing outside of Jasper. Bathed in Buffalo every night.
