I’m trying to buy a ticket from Los Angeles to Frankfurt on Dec 21 or maybe the 22, and a return ticket on Jan 5. Tickets are pretty outrageous right now, likely due to it being Christmas and also my procrastination.

I’ve checked out skiplagged.com, and the cheapest flight as well as the most convenient is a Lufthansa ticket to Iceland with a 24 hour layover in Frankfurt. This is about $650. The plan would be to get off the plane in Frankfurt and not take the connecting flight. If I just bought the Lufthansa ticket only to Frankfurt, it would be like $1400. Does this seem like a good idea or are there some potential risks with doing this? I wouldn’t be able to check a bag in, of course.

Otherwise, I will have to pay over $1000 one way with 1 or more stops and worse times, or leave a day later.

You're buying your tickets way too late.

Also, if you try to skip out on your flight, most airlines now revoke your whole journey. So you better have a different airline for getting back home, if you decide to not take the whole journey to Iceland

Yeah, it would be a different airline.

Don't check any bags. They'll end up in Iceland.

Couldn't you call Lufthansa and see if they can book you on that flight with Frankfurt as your final destination? Seems like a win-win.
