Anyone who has been, would you a split stay between Jasper and Lake Louise or would you spend the entire time based out of Lake Louise and do day trips to Yoho/Columbia Ice Fields, etc.?

Probably looking at a 7 or 8 night trip.

Does the 7-8 days include travel time?

Definitely enough time to split the trip if you have a full week. Regardless if you have kids in tow or want to hike with companions.

Would probably travel in on a Saturday and out the following Sunday.

Definitely going to stay at least part of the time in the Lake Louise area. Is there enough unique things to see in Jasper to make a split stay worthwhile? Or should we just stay in Banff/LL and take a day trip to the Columbia Ice Fields and Yoho?

Jasper is absolutely worth it for a few nights. Split your trip up. It’s nice to get away from crowds near Lake Louise.

Recommend using the Gypsy app as your tour guide. It’s $20.

I rode motorcycle from Seattle up to Jasper and up to Banff from 7/1 to 7/9. I assume you have lodging reserved. Beware that the parking lots for lake louise and lake maurine fill up early in the mornings. Do not expect cooperation from anyone in park service. There are busses that take you to various attractions that are accessed at sky area near lake louise. You can go to all attractions after about 4 PM as parking is available then. Sunset may be as late at 9:30. Gas is about $10 a gallon.

Part of the appeal of going to Jasper is driving the Icefields Parkway. Lots of cool stops to get out and look around, hike, etc. Give yourself a full day on the Parkway and get a map marking all of the attractions because they can be easy to miss.

Jasper is cool too. A lot less crowded and more laid back. Banff (especially Lake Louise) has gotten crowded and hectic. Some places you can't even get to or find parking unless you get up at the crack of dawn or arrive just before sunset, although there is a paid shuttle service. Jasper feels more like a relaxed wilderness vacation. I spent a few days up there and stayed at a nice cabin (Jasper Alpine Village) right on the river.

Here are things I would recommend near Jasper:

- take the boat cruise on Maligne Lake
- visit Maligne Canyon
- hike the Valley of the Five Lakes trail
- visit Mt. Robson
- drive up to Mt Edith Cavell

For my next trip to Banff, I'm going to hike up to Mt. Asiniboine and tent camp. Some of the scenery and hikes up there are just jaw droppingly gorgeous. If money is no object, you can take a helicopter up there and stay in the lodge. That option is expensive but man that scenery is hard to beat. The Canadian Rockies might be the most beautiful spot on the planet.
