I'm trying to plan something with what will be a 4-5 month old at the time. I would prefer drive to make things easier, and would like to keep that <8 hours from Austin. Flexible on length from 3-6 nights.

No real agenda since we'll be with the baby, just want to explore a new place, eat, have some drinks, and have something to look forward to on the calendar.

We're outdoors type people that like to hike, bike, and ski, but obviously these things will be limited with the baby. This also rules out stretching the travel time to 14+ hours and paying a premium for a big mountain trip when we won't really be able to ski much.

Any recommendations throughout Texas, Oklahoma, or Arkansas at that time a year with a baby?

Your requirements have made my suggestions null, but I'll say a couple things.

1) Flying is much easier with an infant than any other time before they are 4 years old or so, so don't be afraid to fly. I'd much rather do that than strap kids in a car for 10 hours.

2) We went to Denver/Beaver Creek with my 3 year old son and my 3 months old daughter. Inlaws came to help so that was a difference maker, but we also rode the Snowcat, did some light sledding, went up and down the gondolas ( ) etc.

When my son was an infant, we went to DC, Seattle, Chicago and Hawaii before by the time he was 13 months old. Again, recruit the in-laws, but we did the flying part ourselves.

When our first child was about 9 months old we did a January trip to Santa Fe and it was quite nice. We are also outdoorsy people but we’re happy to do something low-key and enjoy a new setting. Historic Santa Fe is walkable and we just took a couple days to walk around on foot. There are great restaurants and hotels and spas. although it can be very cold it’s usually sunny and pleasant enough to allow walking around. If spending more than 2-3 days you will likely want to explore the surrounding area a bit which is gorgeous.

It’s a bit longer than 8 hours driving but as someone has posted flying with a 4 month old is actually easy - especially if they are breast feeding. The hotel will provide the crib. At that age their car seat is also their regular carrier so the amount of gear you need to schlep is minimal.
