Hotel Booking During Special Events

I booked a hotel room in New Orleans Jan 11th-14th in the hopes that both the Saints and Tigers are playing that weekend in NOLA. They called me a month ago telling me the rates have changed and are a being sold as non-refundable however I made the reservation before these rates were applied.
What says everyone here? Should I be able to argue this or is there fine print saying they can changes rates on confirmed bookings?

With the details you gave, we would have no idea.
But yes, that's likely bullshite. Did you pay for the reservation or otherwise lock your rate in? Usually when you reserve a room, yes you lock in the current rate.

Yeah should have mentioned. I searched the hotels website and there was nothing about booking policy. I suppose I can email them for it.
I did not pay for the reservation. At the time I booked it was a standard refundable booking up to 3 days before they stay

Don't lose that confirmation email with the T&C you agreed to. Hotels do this shite all the time because their sales manager doesn't know how to look at an event calendar before room release dates and the GM/Owner gets greedy and tries to recoup their employee's incompetence.
When they called, did you agree to the reservation T&C change? And did they send you a new reservation?
If so, I'm raising hell with their national chain. What brand hotel is it? Also be prepared to involve your credit card company if they want to charge you in the event you must cancel.

I was walking into a meeting when they called and told them to call me back and haven’t heard back since. I’m booked at NOPSI.
I’m in full agreement with you about management trying to be greedy. Completely on them for not checking an event calendar before releasing the dates to be booked. I’ll just sit on it and wait to see if they call and hope the football gods are good to south Louisiana teams this year
