Honeymoon Destination: Tulum vs. Isla Holbox

Need to book honeymoon within the next month or so. Will be going early May 2017 for 5 days and am torn between Tulum and Isla Holbox.
Tulum looks to have more availability but is a bit more expensive. We aren't opposed to the all inclusive type resorts, but I personally would rather something different. Don't want to feel corralled into a generic looking hotel with meh food and 15 other honeymooning/anniversary couples. Willing to spend around $2,000 for lodging...cheaper is better, obviously, but I can up the budget a bit if it's worth doing.
Any other tips and recommendations are appreciated. Never done Mexico on our own and it'll be my first time there since 2005 or so on a family cruise. TIA.
ETA: open to other destination recommendations as well. Mexico just seems to be best bang for the buck vs. anywhere else in the Caribbean.

I haven't been either, but have heard really good things about Holbox.

Tulum is becoming very popular and very modern. Isla Holbox is the very opposite.
Check out staying on Isla Mujeres and take a day trip to Holbox.

Holbox. We go to Isla Mujeres at least once a year and the people we've met that go to Holbox say it's what Isla was 20-30 years ago.

If you really want to step back into old Mexican Riviera, Xcalak is the place you want to go. There is a review I wrote in the sticky at the top of the page...

Thanks for the input everyone. I did A LOT of research last night and stumbled across a really nice all inclusive in Antigua, so I think we are going to go that route. Airfare is more to Antigua, but 3 meals a day and alcohol being included I think makes up for it vs. Tulum or Holbox. And it's not a typical Sandals type all inclusive...more of a boutique resort, which is why I'm okay with it
