Help plan my vacation next year

Two options I have in mind:
1)Fly to Miami and drive the Keys. A couple stops on the way, maybe Key Largo and Marathon then on to Key West
2)All-inclusive on a Caribbean island, not Jamaica, already been there.
Probably 7 days, just me and the girlfriend, I'm not cheap but not an OT baller either. If you think island, which one and which resort?

I would do the drive through the Keys between those two options.
An all-inclusive is an all-inclusive is an all-inclusive.

Just don’t do an all inclusive on an island. If you want to do an island then do an island. Really do it. Get a house or condo. Rent a car. Explore. Eat where the locals eat. Talk to the locals. Expand yourself.
Just don’t sit at a fricking all inclusive.

You can do all of those things from an all inclusive.
Look at Punta Cana, DR, Cabo, Puerto Vallarta, Curacao, Aruba. There are several good all inclusives on those islands.

Your post was full of solid and sound advice, until you said this:

No, you can’t. And yes I went a bit overboard. It makes absolutely no sense to me to go to an exotic location and do what you can do at any beach in the states.

Boy, do I agree. Recently spoke with someone just returned from Hawaii....and they barely ever left the resort! If you want a luxury resort hotel experience, go to someplace like the Phoenician in Scottsdale.

Ok, so throwing out the all-inclusive idea. Drive the Keys or is there and island that is a must do?

make sure to go at the right time for Key west...
They have several festivals and things that may throw a wrench in your plans down there.
I went in August of 2016 and I enjoyed it.
There's this weird " end of the world" mysticism down there I felt, eveyrone's carefree and its good vibes for sure.

What do you like? Do you want to veg on a beach? Are you a diver or snorkeler? Are you hikers? Every island offers something a little different.
In terms of islands I like and I'd look at if I were you.
St. Kitts and Nevis
Anguilla
St. Barths
St. John
BVI - look at Peter Island if it's back open
Providenciales, Turks & Caicos
St. Vincent and the Grenadines
Eleuthera
Exuma
Also, with your budget you could get a catamaran and a captain and sail the BVI which is an incredible vacation. From St. John you can ferry to the BVI as long as you have your passport. Islands you can ferry to are Jost Van Dyke, Tortola, Virgin Gorda and Anegada. Anegada is a long trip so you might want to do a night or two there in a beachfront luxury tent Anegada Beach Club.
There are plenty of other places to stay in the BVI but sadly many took major hits from Irma and won't be open again until 2019 at least.
The islands listed above would all be considered among the nicer and safest islands in the Caribbean although the list certainly isn't inclusive of every island that fits that category.

If you have never done the Keys, I would say go to Miami and make the drive. It is one of those things that you have to experience at least once in your life. I will say that after the storm last year, I don't know how much damage is still being repaired, but I would hope that by next year everything should be fairly close to being back to normal.
I would say one stop you want to make is a trip out to the Christ of the Abyss statue at Dry Rocks. It is fairly shallow, so you can see it snorkeling. I went back in 2001 and we used Capt. Slate's Atlantis Dive Center. He has since moved a bit further south and I do not think he goes to Dry Rocks anymore, but I could be wrong.
We also stopped at the beach on Bahia Honda, which is just to the west of the 7 mile bridge. The beach has been rated as one of the best by Conde Nast, and I think it may be one of the only real sandy beaches in the Keys, or at least that far down.
Key West is a cool place to visit. Walk Duval street. Watch the sunset (and all of the associated acts) at Mallory Square. Check out Hemmingway's house. Have a Sloppy Joe at Sloppy Joe's bar. Have a beer at Captain Tony's (which is the original location of Sloppy Joe's).
If you want to stay someplace unique, check out the Sunset Key Cottages. They are pricey but they are located on Sunset Key/Tank Key, which the US Navy built in the 60s as a fuel depot, about 500 yards west of Mallory Square. You take a ferry out there and back, from Key West.

1) and be sure to take the ferry over to the Dry Tortugas for a day.
