Where and when? Just curious because in 12 years of visiting Maui, I've never come across anything like that. I do know they want to limit tourism by capping new hotel builds, requiring reservations at popular attractions, etc. I've just never personally experienced locals being rude or anti tourist. I also tend to stick to the same area when I go. We're taking my husband's granddaughters next month and will be getting around the island more than we usually do, so who knows what we'll encounter.

When I was on the Northshore Oahu mostly, some guy was standing by a statue in Waikiki telling people it was his peoples land and what not.
No one was actually rude they were friendly and would talk and then hand you a paper, talk about their goals, and asked for donations. There was a couple of signs (no billboards obviously) along one of the drives that were about stopping tourism, etc.

It will never fly with all of the haloes, Japanese, Filipinos, etc. Ancestral Hawaiians are around 10% of the population, and most are of mixed ancestry.
