We pull a camper so we stay at tannehill state park or Noccalula falls state park on either side of Birmingham. Noccalula falls would be neat to see and there’s a Jacks for a decent breakfast right there. Plenty of hotels in the Gadsden area right there to choose from.

That's good.

We went all the way to NYC and then back home.

We do well on road trips, but I think that is because there's no way to justify 8 plane tickets. Plus, since we enjoy it, and take our time, the kids do also.

We've done Disney several times, too.

That's a good point. This will be our 2nd road trip together as a family of 4, but the last trip was a 3 hour drive that we broke up by stopping to eat in the middle.

After reading this thread, I'll probably just plan on Chattanooga on the way up, but plan something in the middle like Trussville or Noccalula falls to have a better middle point on the way back.

Ross Bridge is an option. It is right outside Bham.

Whether you stop in Chattanooga on the way up or back, I would extend the trip a day so you see some things there. There is a LOT to do in that city.

Tennessee Aquarium (IMHO better than Ripley's in Gburg), Ruby Falls, Chattanooga Choo-Choo, Rock City, Incline Railway, Interactive Discovery Museum is great for kids, but probably closed or highly restrictive right now. Also a couple of good Civil War museums if you are into the history thing. Eat at Puckett's Grocery next to the Aquarium if you are there.
You could honestly make a 3-4 day vacation out of Chattanooga itself.
