Francophiles: Provence or the Dordogne?

Considering a late spring trip to either Provence or the Dordogne/Perigord. Plan to fly in, rent a car, drive around. Anyone been to both during late spring? Food/art/architecture, countryside/villages are among my interests. Don’t care about nightlife or “scene”, (tho yes to scenery).

We love Provence. We stayed in Mormoiron and drove all over the area. It's shockingly beautiful. A trip down to Avignon is a must, but we'd rather stay in the countryside over the city, but we didn't entertain staying within the walls. Still, Avignon is unreal.
Flew into Paris, train to Dijon, rented a car there and headed south. Beautiful wineries everywhere. We loved Vienne, the architecture and the river are both great.

Have a trip planned to Provence for end of May so will be following this. However, the Dordogne also looks beautiful and perhaps a bit more laid back than Provence, but I think the charm, history, scenery, etc... is probably similar.

The prehistory angle in the Dordogne is part of the appeal. Lascaux, plus truffles. What’s not to like?

Dordogne. Hands down. My friends and I like to head down there pretty often, to hangout on the river. I love tubing down the rivers back home, and so bought a bunch of tubes of all of us, and I think I'm starting a trend! But really it's only kayaks available to rent.
That being said, my gf loves all the small towns. Check out Sarlat, Domme, Tournepique, Bezenac, Rocamadour, Cahors, Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, Figeac, Puy-l'Évêque, and Souillac.
The region has great truffles and the best foie gras in all of France.
Also, there's amazing caves and natural wonders.

Did you visit any wineries? Was thinking about doing french wine country. Was wondering how hard it was to get into these wineries.

Which town is your favorite? Thinking of Sarlat as a home base.....

I'd use Sarlat or Cahors as a home base because it's a little bit larger than the others, and more to do when you have downtime. Also, go check out some of the duck farms near by where they make the foie gras....okay, I'm heading down to the store get some foie gras now
And my favorite village is Rocamadour, I think.

Thanks—I appreciate the response. Going to look more closely at Cahors.
