I'm in the middle of a very illuminating book called The Basque History of the World by Mark Kurlansky that is so good I felt compelled to recommend it here. It's an historical book, but reads more like a travelogue at times. These people are fascinating and I'm looking forward to enjoying their culture when the Mrs. and I pay them a visit later this year.

Did a trip up to that region last year. It was great, very different feel from the "traditional" Spain of the south or Barcelona.

Have you read Salt or Cod, his other books? Great writer of niche histories

No, I haven't. But now that I'm familiar with him, they're on my list. Cod, in particular, sounds very interesting.

Good to hear. We are only doing the Spanish part this time, but look forward to visiting Biarritz, Bayonne and St Jean de Luz at a later date

We did a big loop of Bilbao, Logrono, Bordeaux, San Sebastián, and then back to Bilbao, with some stops along the way.

If you are into wine I would definitely recommend getting down into La Rioja, not too far from the Basque region.
