FL info: Ozello trail, Crystal River, Homosassa
Anyone have some recent info on the Ozello, FL area? Just booked plane tickets to Tampa and looking to drive to Homosassa/Crystal Springs area for 5 days/4 nights. Ozello Trail seems interesting & out of the way....if you've been in that area, I appreciate your sharing info. TIA

When are you going? I don't know much about Ozello area, but Crystal River is fun for scalloping during the season. Now sure if I can find enough to do for 4-5 days though.

Lived in Tampa for 14 years. Rent kayaks for paddling/swimming at 3 sisters springs. Manatee are usually there year round. Paddle or boat to Crystal Springs headwater ( king's bay). Snorkel and see tarpon, rays, manatees. Scallop season is a blast. Float down Rainbow river in a tube. Weeki Wachee- see the mermaids perform and paddle or spend the day swimming at the headwater. Chassahowitzka is a nice paddle and you can swim in underwater tunnels. Ozello trail is a rocky bitch and impossible to boat unless you are local. Further North is Cedar Key. Laid back old Florida. Home of native clams. You can stop and buy right off the boat.

Grew up swimming, diving, kayaking, boating on that coast. So much to do. Some thoughts:

Kayak On "The Chaz" or Weeki Wachee. We used to go diving in this sink in the river called "Hospital Hole". ~ 140 ft. deep. Really cool dive.

We used to camp on the Halls River. Rent a boat near and tour the river. Near Homosassa Springs.

Further up, near Crystal River, is one of the "Diving Capitals of Florida". Used to go all the time. Great dive. Rent kayaks. Manatee Tours. LINK

As mentioned, in season, scalloping in the Gulf can be a blast. Rent a boat and give it a try (suitable for the Gulf obviously as the weather can change on you in the summer months frequently and the waves can get quite high). Or just hire a charter guide and let them do all the work as they know the "lay of the land".

Caveat on all of this: The springs can get CROWDED on the weekends so plan accordingly.

Thanks, y’all. Just booked an inexpensive camp type place on the Ozello trail. Looking forward to fishing for snook off the back deck, and likely doing a charter trip while there. Just looking for a change in scenery after a long year of Covid. House comes with kayaks, and we can rent elsewhere if we decide to paddle the springs.

I saw a few pics of three sisters and it looked ridiculous—like you could walk from boat to boat.

On the weekends in the summer for sure you could. But you have to dock the boats out from the actual springs and then swim thru a tunnel into the springs. Colder water and crystal clear and much less folks! Enjoy the Nature Coast. We miss it.
