Get cash from an ATM. Most places don't take American money. That being said I spend most of my time there up in Edmonton. It may be different close to the US border.

Crossing the border is easy. Answer any questions with mo wise arse remarks. Do not try to take a gun across the border. They may ask if you have one. The best answer tot heat question is a simple "no" and nothing else. "Why are you entering Canada?" answer, "Tourists"
If anyone asks you "Do you want to play Duck, Duck, Goose?" Say "No."

I went to my credit union before my vacation and told them I was driving over the border into Canada, and to let them know that I would be using my debit card there.
The first restaurant we went into for breakfast, I tried to use my debit card and there was a hold on it!
Make sure you are very specific with your bank ahead of time so this doesn't happen to you.

Some of the card issuers now allow you to go online before a trip and alert them of the dates and countries you will travel too.
Look for a link to Travel Alert or similar.
