I’ve never booked tickets on Expedia, but always used it as a price gauge. Then go and book on the airline website. And I ususally fly Southwest, so that is a non-issue.

This time I want to book an international flight to the Caribbean and SW isn’t an option. The best deal on Expedia is outbound on United, and then the inbound leg on American. I went through the process like was going to book, and it let me select me seats and everything.

Is this for real? I’ve always heard of people having “problems” with tickets booked through Expedia and other websites like this.

Thoughts? Comments?

If you don’t book through the airline you can be a lower priority with the airline. Make sure you can get a seat selection right away. Sometimes it doesn’t let you pick your seats until 24hours prior to departure.

I rarely use Expedia anymore. But I have used it in the past for things like flights+hotel, where I literally found the deal cheaper than just a flight somehow. So yes, it can be worth it.

Try booking two one-way tickets on United and AA's sites if you can replicate the price. As mentioned, those travel websites usually cause the most problems if you need to be rebooked day of

I use Expedia often for flights, hotels and cars. I have no complaint about them. Sometimes their prices are cheaper than you can get directly with the hotel and airline. You can pull up your account and everything is right there. I am using them for a France trip in April.

The best hack for expedia I have found is doing a hotel bundle for one night with a flight. Prices can be less than the flight itself. Then you can book your other hotels as you see fit.

Thanks to all for the responses. So, basically I need to make sure I don’t get the “low” economy ticket and pick my seats for the Mrs. and I. That way we have confirmed seats and won’t be bumped or asigned randomly.

It doesn't make you choose hotel dates/duration that coincide with your flight?

When I had to do it I think I had to start my trip with the hotel stay, but you could do as many hotel nights as you wanted 1,3, whole stay, etc.

There's a box you can check when searching that says "I don't need hotel for the whole duration" or something like that. It doesn't have to be the first day either.
