Yeah, but for a 5 night stay, I’m looking at $1,000 more for playa vs riviera.

I'd check between the two and see how they are being affected by sargassum/sea grass. We stayed at excellence Rivera a year or so ago and it was so bad we didn't use the beach.
A friend that lives in Playa has been sending me photos that it has been bad by him again.
I'd pay extra to not have to deal with the seaweed if that is possible.

I don't think it's possible to avoid in Cancun/PM/RM/Tulum, it just depends on which hotel does a better job cleaning it up.
