Hi, I am 26 yr old single male moving to the triangle area in the fall. Which would be a better fit for me: Durham or Chapel Hill/Carrboro?

Raleigh will be too far from work btw.

I would look in CH/C’boro first. Seems to be a high rate of crime in Durham.

Check out Hillsborough, cost of living is supposed to be a little less there.

I feel like Hillsborough would be perfect if I was in my 30s+ with a family. Though being single in my 20s has been favoring CH/Durham.

Durham has plenty of places to hang out but as someone said the crime is the worst in the Triangle.

I’d definitely look at CH/Carborro first...too bad Raleigh is too far because downtown Raleigh looks like a lot of fun for someone of your age.

Downtown Raleigh is legit for singles in their 20s and 30s. I would consider that even with the drive just because you will have the college crowd from NC State and the 3 chick schools, but also the huge number of recent grads from all over NC that move to Raleigh. Raleigh probably has one of the better young adult scenes of anywhere in the south. Also more concerts, pro hockey, and shorter drive to the beach if any of that is important.

However, if you are set on Chapel Hill/Carrboro or Durham, then don't hesitate in finding a place near UNC. Duke is a school for Yankees and homosexuals and Durham is a crime riddled ghetto. (maybe a little hyperbole) I see you are from Albuquerque so maybe that is appealing to you.

Go rent you a nice loft apartment on Franklin St or an old house in Carrboro and enjoy the paradise that is Chapel Hill. 26 is young enough to not be creepy at the bars on Franklin, and the girls at Carolina are some of the hottest, smartest, and most down to earth you will find in the south.

I lived in Durham and LOVED IT. Favorite place I’ve ever lived.

Check out the apartments in the old tobacco factories. West Village Apartments I think? Cool modern vibe in a good area - walking distance to the strip of bars.

Definitely right to stay out of Durham. CH/Carr is close enough that you can Uber cheaply.

Carrboro is a little more hippy and older than CH. If I were you, living in CH would be the best. Try to get as close to Franklin as you can afford. Carrboro is just a short walk from there.

South Durham would be my first look. Somewhere close to I-40 if you need to commute West. There are some nice areas in there.

Wow I'm honored to have a reply from GeorgetheGreek!

You said it was your favorite place to live- big statement. Can you please expand upon that? Can you recommend some other neighborhoods too? I'll try to find a place by the tobacco factories, but it's good to have backup options. Finally, why do you think most of the replies recommend CH instead of Durham?

I don’t like a city overly busy. Durham was quiet and for me, I appreciated that. But the nights we wanted to go out we still could either in Durham or with a short drive to CH.

West Village Apartments were just super cool. Great place. Also walking distance to the Durham Bulls baseball stadium and downtown Durham.

As for crime.... it’s like any city. Just don’t go to the shitty areas, but overall it’s very safe. Oh, and did I mention West Village is a 5 min drive to Duke? Why not catch a game.
