Dublin for St. Patrick's Day

I guess my question to help you, is do you plan to be in Dublin or somewhere else (Galway) for St. Pats?

Went back in 2012 or 13 (whenever tiger band was in the parade)

Stayed at the hilton just south of st Stephen’s green and it was a very easy walk into the heart of the city. St Patrick’s day was actually underwhelming imo. None of the bars were open before the parade and they didn’t allow alcohol in the streets. Ireland was in the rugby finals against France a few days prior and the bars were nuts for that though.

To follow on what Cheese said, this year, St. Patricks day is the last day of the 6N, and Ireland is playing away at England, but the bars will be crazy.

Temple Bar will be 90% foreigners in Ireland for St. Patricks, and the other 10% of from the country who come into Dublin.

I would recommend going to a pub such as Slatterys and enjoy the rugby that day and St. Patricks. This is over in D4, so not too many tourists.

If you venture near the Temple Bar, find a bar that you like and stay there.

If you are in Galway, Cork, etc it is a great day, but crowded.

That's a fair question. We are debating within our group whether to stay in Dublin or go to a less tourist-based city for the actual day. Just trying to get as much feedback as we can at this point to make the call.

Any recommendations for pubs/restaurants/things to do in Galway? Think we'll be there for two days and likely be there for St. Paddy's day. Thanks in advance for any insight.
