Has anyone done this? I am leery of driving on unpaved roads in unfamiliar territory. What am I to expect?

Been to both, but didn't drive between them. Looks like about an hour of unpaved roads. Hard to say until you see them, It's a dry area, so they may be okay.

EDT: If fact they say Indian Rte 7 (Hwy 59) is paved. So, there might not be much unpaved roads to transverse.

We drove that route from Monument Valley to Petrified Forest National Park in 2021. We passed by the entrance to Canyon De Chelly on the way. Couldn't stop there though because Navajo Nation was still closed for Covid.

We had a rental Chevy Equinox on that trip that handled the roads just fine. Took it over 2,000 miles through various national parks out west. The bumpiest part of the Utah/Arizona portion was actually driving the Valley of the Gods 17 mile loop near Monument Valley.
