Anyone do this? Can see it being a little warm and lots of crowds, but would love to be in the nations capital for the 4th. Thoughts?

It’s a good time to be there, but yes it will be very hot.
Get to the Capitol early enough to get a good seat on the lawn for the concert and fireworks.
Seeing Stevie Wonder play “Superstitious” while the fireworks were going off behind him is a memory that I won’t forget.

The wife and I will be there in late March. Staying @ the Mayflower. Any restaurants you can recommend?

Honestly I think there are others here who would be much better at pointing out good restaurants. There’s a lot of great places though. Old Ebbitt is touristy but it’s a good lunch spot.
I will say, if you like bourbons and whiskeys, go to Jacks Rose for a drink one night.

DC on the 4th is great though it does get hot and crowded.
Old Town is actually a great spot to catch the fireworks and it's a bit more my style.
Mount Vernon is a must and if you plan on touring the city, try to do it as early in the day as possible to avoid the heat/crowds

All types. Only thing i know we are doing the last evening of our stay is some type of dinner cruise. Up for just about anything.

My brother in law interned up there one summer several years back. He said the only thing that made it worthwhile was being there on the 4th. The rest of the time was just working long hours, living in a dirty city in all the heat, and being away from home.

for steakhouses I'd recommend any of the following
Joe's Seafood and Steak
Oceans Prime
Capital Grille
For small plates I've found these to be fantastic spots
Zaytinya(Greek-ish)
The Source(asian)
Proof('merican)
Doi Moi(southeast asian)
Estadio(spanish)
Jaleo(spanish)
If you're a whiskey fan, especially scotch you MUST go to Jack Rose. The food there is fantastic as well.
For an amazing dining/drink experience check one of the several michelin restaurants
Minibar(**)
Blue Duck Tavern(*)
Komi(*)
Minibar is fricking great and is def a once every few years type of dining experience
