Good morning fellow travelers.
I know we are all itching to get back to globetrotting ASAP. Our summer trip to South Africa has been canceled and the Mrs. and I are trying to find something to do before the end of the year. We are thinking of doing a Christmas markets European River cruise and then stay maybe 2-3 weeks in Europe after that. Thinking dates of Nov 28- Dec 20. Wife just wants to be home for Christmas.

Any suggestions? River cruise starts in Nuremberg and ends in Vienna. Open to multi country ideas.

Well Nuremberg is generally considered the best Christmas Market in Europe so good call! Germany is filled with them.

My wife is sort of obsessed with the Europe Christmas Markets so this would be a great trip for us as well. Would love a report.

Not to put a damper on things but Rick Steves has a podcast on German Christmas Markets. He did comment that they all start to blend together, so make sure your trip isn't JUST about Christmas markets.

Did the Viking cruise from Budapest to Nuremberg last Christmas. I would definitely recommend doing it.

Let me know if you have any questions, I'd be more than happy to help.

cant help with any cruise, but I did the xmas markets two Christmas' ago in London, Prague, brno, Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest. So if you're interested in those spots I can go on.

As for Vienna, I loved that place during winter time. So glad I made the trip there.

I also did Vienna-Salzburg-Kitzbuhel a couple of years ago for christmas. Vienna was awesome with a large variety of markets. Rick Steves is right, though, they all do start to become very similar, so plan to do other things besides that.

FYI- if you go during actual christmas time (23rd-31st) Most stores are closed, and a many restaurants too. I would recommend doing a trip before the 22nd or so to ensure that more shops etc. are open. Hope that helps, and hopefully you are able to travel and enjoy it by the end of the year. I'm skeptical with the covid-19 stuff, but I like your optimism.

:EDIT: I see you are looking at the first part of December for your trip. I think that is the ideal time to go as most markets open early december.

Echoing what those above have said about Vienna, I went with family this past December and loved it. I do agree the Christmas markets do have a lot of overlap but it is a great city to walk around and explore.
