Cheap Vacation Ideas

What are weekend vacation options that won’t break the bank?
We enjoy the outdoors. I would love to go out west but it doesn’t seem like I can get cheap flights anywhere.

Frontier Airlines, Lafayette to Denver, CO, round trip tickets come to around ~$100 right now, departs on a Friday, returns the Monday. Those prices go up as it gets closer to ski season but even still, that same flight ran us ~$350 for two between Christmas & New Years last year.
ETA: Denver is pretty cool, from there you've got tons of options for hiking, camping, biking, etc.

Is that a good airline? We don’t fly much

Its $50-75 each way, its not great. But well worth it. Direct flights too. But if you fly somewhere and add a rental car, its not going to be "cheap". With a family you are looking at $1000 or so for flights plus a rental car for a week.
I try to take at least one cheap vacation a year with the family where we just get away to do basic stuff as a family.
Camping, lesser beach, visit somewhere in the off season. Etc. Small city like Chattanooga, Austin, Little Rock, etc. Stay at a cheaper hotel and do some of the local activities.

Spirit airlines are cheap to Denver

Have you driven to northern Arkansas? A paddle on the Buffalo River might be nice. Roughly 8 hrs from SE LA.

These are always my favorite trips. I love small Southern towns and cities.

We just got back from hot springs actually and we had a good time
I think we may give Natchez, MS a shot.
Any suggestions around there would be great

It's not awful, but not the best
If I have to fly Spirit or Frontier i usually fork over the extra $30 or so for a larger seat up front.

You get what you pay for, they charge more for checked bags than other airlines but if just for a weekend I could get everything I'd need into a backpack. Seating is decent but don't recline and I wouldn't want to use them for more than about a 3 hour flight as the seats get a bit uncomfortable, but for their price I can sacrifice a bit and be happy. I plan to use them again.

14 hour or so drive to New Mexico. If you really wanted to go "out west", that's not a bad place to start. Everything out west is a LOT of driving anyway. From any decent town to the next is a LONG drive normally 1-2 hours. So you gotta get used to driving anyway.
