Cville 29 blog is a good resource.
What are you looking for though?

I'm going to be downtown, so just looking for good places to eat. And maybe a bar to sip some whiskey.

Cville has great food, and the second highest restaurant density after NYC.
The Whiskey Jar has a decent kitchen, and an excellent selection of Bourbon and Whiskey. It’s down near the Omni.
Citizen Burger Bar is a good place for a high end burger. Mas Tapas is an amazing. And just five minutes away by Uber. I would also look at Lampo for Neapolitan style Pizza.
Cville has good beer. Devils Backbone is the best local brewer, but you could look at Champion, 3 Notch, and Hardywood.
Hardywood is based out of Richmond, but hey opened a taproom in Cville.

The Local is really good. The downtown mall area is great. If you get over towards campus and the corner I have always enjoyed The Virginian.

Boylan is a fun bar. Surprisingly good food.
The Virginian also has huge sentimental value.
Both are on the corner, down by the university.

Same here. $2.00 rails on Thursdays will always hold a special place in my heart. That, and the sheer amount of cigarette smoke that was created in those booths.
To answer the OPs question, Cville has a ton of great restaurants and bars. If you are willing to venture 10-15 minutes west of the city in Crozet, hit up Duners for dinner.
It is a laid back spot with really good food. People go there in shorts and jacket and tie, the owners do not care. There's also a decent chance you'll see Howie Long picking up take out (or at least there was 10 years ago when I worked there as a bus boy).
If you're into the "scenic brewery scene," definitely check out Blue Mountain Brewery, which is also west of town. They've got a great outdoor set up if the weather is nice.

I got to UVa after the smoking ban went into effect. So I missed that!
I did see Chris and Howie around town though.
Chris is big fan of Ace Biscuit and BBQ.

Had some drinks and cigar at Millers. Ate at Christian’s Pizza, Citizen Burger and Downtown Grille. All very good.
