Castles on the Rhine

Greetings from the Romantic Rhine.
Spent the day cruising up the Middle Rhine on a Viking riverboat. Beautiful scenery.
We started this morning in Koblenz. Germany and have been slowly making our way up river. There are about 40 castles perched on the cliffs on both banks. We have been following a map that identifies 20 of the most prominent ones.
The only thing missing is a clear blue sky. It has been cool, cloudy and drizzly this afternoon, but that hasn’t stopped us from taking plenty pictures.
Highly recommend to anyone considering a trip like this.

We didn’t do a cruise but did a 2-night stop between Amsterdam & Rothenburg after hopping off the train in Köln.
Boppard has a fun ski lift that goes up to a Spaten bar in the summer overlooking a huge bend in the river. Hopefully you got to hop off at Rheinfels Castle in St Goar or in the lovely town of Bacharach (our home base for the region)
Underrated area…enjoy the cruise!

Thanks. Having a great time.
We didn’t get to stop along the Middle Rhine other than Koblenz where we spent a few hours in the morning. I remember passing through Boppard on the river. Beautiful area.
We spent the first day in Amsterdam. Saw the Anne Frank House and took a nighttime canal boat ride.
There is an optional excursion to Rothenburg later in the week but we aren’t taking it because we have been there before.

did you dock in mainz. i stayed at the hilton mainz once and there were river cruise boats docked beside the hotel. you can get a day hop on/off pass from the DB station in mainz to tour the small towns along the river up to koblenz. i took the train all the way to cochem on the moselle river. great town with a frankenstein looking castle just outside town. enjoy your trip, the rhine is beautiful there.

Not going to Mainz. Today we were on the Rhine-Main-Danube Canal going through the Panama Canal style locks. Spent the afternoon in Miltenberg and are now on our way to Wurzburg.
Correction.
We just left the fantastic town of Wurzburg and have not reached the RMD Canal yet. We are on the Main River.

I’ll spend 8 days on the Rhine from Amsterdam to Basel in September. Really looking forward to it
At 14, did a one day cruise and saw many castles in ruin along with Lorelei
Knew I would one day go back. The Danube had some similar sights, but the Rhine has always stood out

Glad to hear that. Great time of year to go. Hope your ship has had a "run" of the norovirus. Seeing on some Viking Facebook Groups that's been an issue recently.
What are you enjoying most about the cruise so far?
We were on the Sigrun (Amsterdam to Basel - 2023). Are you going "A to B" or "B to A"? (VIking Lingo for Amsterdam and Basel!). If you're ending up in Basel, highly recommend going to Colmar France and spending some time. We did that and had a great time. If you're ending up in Amsterdam, hope you can stay a few days. We spent 3 days prior to the cruise and had a great time.
If you had time, visit the Zaanse Schans; discover crafts, windmills and a unique heritage park from 1850; 15 minutes from Amsterdam!
My sister and husband just left. Sent me some great pictures. Showed me the beer they were drinking and a cordial of Jenever. Never heard of it. Some kind of original gin made by the Dutch.

I am on the Grand European route.
The scenery along the Middle Rhine from Koblenz on the way to Miltenberg was beautiful. There was about a three hour period when we passed castle after castle after castle.
The ports have been good. They vary from small, quaint German villages to bigger cities like Cologne and Nuremberg. We were in Nuremberg yesterday and any got a good dose of WWII history.
We are in Regensburg on the Danube now. Attended Easter Sunday mass in the cathedral this morning and I just posted on the Food and Drink Board about my lunch in a 900 year old restaurant.

Thanks.
The weather has been pretty good with the exception of a couple of cool, misty days. It started raining in Bamberg Friday so we ducked into the cathedral where a beautiful Good Friday organ service was going on. Worked out fine.
Wish I knew how to send pictures. ??

We started off in Bamberg for one of our cruises. Hired a driver to take us from Prague. Really pretty older town! At least keep the updates coming!!
