I have done this a few times. Make sure you get a print out of the rental agreement and keep that with you. Some of the rentals places don't give you a physical copy of the rental agreement especially if you pick up the car at an airport and bypass the desk.

I would say much better easier to fly into Buffalo. Toronto Airport can be a huge shite show

Definitely fly into Buffalo and drive it. I've done this many times when I worked for a company based in Toronto and the flight/drive is way easier than dealing with Pearson airport in Toronto. The border crossing is a piece of cake and the drive is easy. Allow some time for Niagara Falls.
