We're looking at our fall vacation plans. Typically, I take the family to the Smokies. However, I'm looking at something a little different this year.

Do any of you know much about Boone? Is is ideal for a 4-5 night family vacation? Is there plenty to do? I'll have the family, so hiking, water activities, shopping, breweries, restaurants, etc is what we'd be looking at. I'd want to rent a cabin/airbnb.

What do y'all think?

If you’re looking to save money, do it on a weekend App State doesn’t have a home football game. Boone is beautiful in the Fall and can get crowded with tourists. King Street in Downtown Boone has a lot of shops and restaurants. Also their is a relatively new mountain coaster near Sugar Mountain that the family might enjoy.

Don’t know much about Blowing Rock. I was too poor as a student to do much there

Yes, between Boone, Blowing Rock and Banner Elk (where we usually go) you’ll have plenty to do. Good breweries and wineries around. Everything you asked for. As mentioned App State games can fill Boone up on Saturdays. There are also a few Fall Festivals that have big draws in the area (Woolly Worm Festival and Octoberfests).

Check out Grandfather Mountain (mile high swinging bridge) and the Linville viaduct on the Blue Ridge Parkway LINK

We spent two nights in Blowing Rock in 2019. It has a small, but nice, downtown area with shops and restaurants. And of course there is The Blowing Rock which is kind of a tourist trap place but worth going to at least once. We had a really good breakfast at Famous Toastery. The fudge in town is good too; they make it on site.

Between BR and Boone is the Tweetsie Railroad. An amusement park that is more for younger kids I think, never been.

Linville Falls is about an hour south, down the Blue Ridge Parkway; there are trails there. Linville Caverns are also about an hour from Boone. It's not a big cavern, doesn't take long to see it. There is also a trail around Price Lake which is about 20 minutes from Boone. I think you can rent boats there but it's a small lake.

West Jefferson is neat little town, about 30 min north of Boone, with some good restaurants on main street. It's known for the murals painted around town and for the frescos in St. Mary's Episcopal Church there. There is a sister church, Holy Trinity Church of the Frescos, in Glendale Springs. You can take the BRP to GS, see that church and then take a short drive to W. Jefferson. Just outside of WJ is the Mt. Jefferson State Natural Area. You can drive to near the top and there are hiking trails there.

About an hour & 1/2 south of Boone is Little Switzerland. There's a hotel, restaurant, and small stores there. It has a great view and a fire pit they light at night.

The roads are packed in summer and fall, so plenty of people vacationing. I think it’s a good spot if you want a slow placed vacation with cooler weather. Grandfather Mountain and Tweetsie for the kids, a couple of breweries and bars for the adults. Appalachian Mountain Brewery is nice. A good meal is Eleven80.

We used to vacation in the area almost yearly. Had a child that later went to Appalachian State.

We love the area.

Take a step back in time and visit Tweetsie Railroad. An old time amusement park. Campy, but fun. In the fall they have the "Ghost Train" that runs through the woods, driven by Casey Bones.

In season, take in a game at Kidd Brewer Stadium. For people used to huge SEC type environments, it's actually cool. Small stadium. Passionate fans. Crisp fall air!

Where to stay? Plenty of cabin rentals on AirBNB. Plenty of cabins in the area, particularly near Beech Mountain.

Some other thoughts...

Not for all, but we would highly recommend Leatherwood Mountain to stay. Very high end community that caters to the horse community. But amazing homes for rent. You can see Grandfather Mountain. NOW, it's about 45 minutes through a national forest on small one lane roads, often gravel. Coming home at night added to the "horror". Kids still talk about it to this day.

Look into the Chetola Lodge in Blowing Rock. More of a resort, but not far from Blowing Rock.

We stayed in the Mountainaire Inn. Small, but clean and well run motor lodge. Nice thing is it's a couple of blocks for the center part of Blowing Rock.

PS: I'd throw a vote in for looking around Brevard NC. Hiking. Biking. Tubing. Waterfalls. Nice food and beer scene in town. Or, consider around Blue Ridge NC. Lake activities. Hiking. Nice little town. Go visit Dahlonega GA. For that matter, stay at the amazing Amicalola Falls State Park Lodge! Park has the highest waterfalls in the Eastern US. We go there every year or two.

Finally, all this stuff is more "magical" in the fall. But go during the weekdays as it can get crowded as well.
