So we will be heading to GNP in about a month. Wife and 3 kids. After reading a lot of the posts on here and doing some research, one concern I have is that the shorter trails the kids can do may be very crowded. So I was trying to find some less crowded hiking areas that aren't too far away, and it seems the Bob Marshall Wilderness area might fit the bill. Any experience with hiking there, and any specific trails you'd recommend? How far is that from Columbia Falls? Thanks as always.

How old are your kids? The Bob is a backpackers paradise... it takes about 2-2.5 hours drive from highway 2 to get to the silver tip trailhead below the hungry horse reservoir. There is the spotted bear ranger station you could take your kids to and do some short hikes, but the bob itself is multi day backpacking and no day loop trails or anything .... the Chinese wall is the main draw into the bob but it’s about a 3 night journey to get to it.

I personally wouldn’t recommend taking young kids to the bob. There are no amenities... pure wilderness.

These pics were taken by me last week.

My girlfriend is spending her summer on a trail crew in the Bob. She’s way more bad arse than I am.

6 weeks at Spotted Bear, and 6 weeks at Schaffer Meadows.

Thanks. I had a feeling it might be a bit too rough for them. Shoot, that might be too rough for me.

We're definitely gonna hit the Glacier trails - I'm just trying to find something that won't be too crowded but also isn't 20 miles roundtrip.

If you want to avoid high crowds I would stay off the highline trail, hidden lake trail, and avalanche lake trail. Go to two medicine and hike scenic point, or to many glacier and hike to cracker lake.

There are over 700 miles of trails in the park (mostly backcountry), but he park is getting overused more and more each summer. Especially the trails closest to the road around Logan pass. Most people never venture beyond the road itself, so keep that in mind. The NPS is getting ideas on possibly even creating a shuttle only service in the peak summer months (like Zion) but nothing is set in stone.

One of my favorite day hikes is Siyeh Pass. You’ll see a glacier or two, as well as traverse the highest elevated section of maintained trail in the park.

Is this the vertigo inducing hike? Been a while, so name escapes me, however the views remain.

Boated some in the Bob Marshall it's really not the same type thing as Glacier, it's pretty and good hiking, but while your at GNP I'd find something there.

Not sure about this, but I'm assuming you're referring to the highline trail.
