I'm planning on a ski trip this winter for my wife and I in February. We are both beginner skiers and mainly going to enjoy a week away from the kids and our anniversary. I was looking at Big Sky or Whitefish as you can fly into Kalispell or Bozeman. Has anyone stayed in these two towns and commuted to the resorts? If so, any recommendations on where to stay?

The two times I’ve been to big sky I stayed on resort at the Huntley Lodge and the Summit hotel. Both are at the base area and I would recommend either. Haven’t stayed in the town of Big Sky, but the drive isn’t a bad one. Make sure you have a 4wd if commuting every day. We got some pretty good snow one day and multiple 2wd ended up in the ditches both on the way to the resort and at the smaller roads on the resort.

Turo was a good, convenient, inexpensive (compared to traditional rental) resource for this.

Are you talking about commuting from Bozeman? Only way I would do that is if I was splitting time at Bridger Bowl and Big Sky, otherwise I would either stay the resort or the town which is a 10 minute drive from the lifts. I know it is expensive but it is worth it. The road from Bozeman to Big Sky can get a bit sketchy, not something I would want to drive everyday.

Thanks, this is the kind of information I was looking for from both of you.

Sure thing. I would consider myself a novice skier (have been to steamboat twice, winter park, and now big sky) and big sky has definitely been my favorite place for skiing. I went a few years back during the summer and the mountain biking was awesome as well.
