By “Smokies” are you limiting yourself to just the National Park or do you mean anywhere near the Blue Ridge from GA on up?

If the latter, a lot of folks like Bryson City for a big cabin. Get on VRBO or Airbnb and apply the appropriate filters. Then go to the map view and have some fun!

Bryson City is just 29 minutes from the NP boundary and 59 minutes from Clingman’s Dome. So, very accessible.

I live in and own rental properties around Bryson, so I can confirm it’s where you want to be, but I’m just a little biased.

OP, what are you looking to do? Rafting at the NOC is a short drive away. Guided mountain bike trips are fun and available from Tsali Cylces in Bryson. Beer available at their shop for you. An LSU baw is always hanging around. Plenty of tubing in Deep Creek. Guided fishing trips as well. The casino in Cherokee has bowling, pool, and an arcade.

You need to try to book the raftings and what nots now if you know when you going to do it. Floating on tubes will probably be plentiful but those rafting tours book up.
