Always contact your credit/debit card company at least a week in advance of your trip and notify them of your travel plans so they don’t block your card for fraud while traveling internationally. Use a large bank (chain) ATM for local currency. Airport currency exchanges hit you with fees plus the exchange rate isn’t so good.
If you are really nervous go to a local bank by home and get $200 worth or Euros or so.
And my biggest tip would be don’t carry a lot of cash.

We like to get a couple hundred bucks from the bank in advance. Then just use our debit card over there. Generally from the bank ATMs. Never really had a problem finding any.
But it depends on which country you are going to. If they don't accept Euros definitely get some in advance.

There are Unicredit ATMs all over the Rome airport which (despite having a shady name in my opinion) is the largest bank in Italy.
In the city I usually use Unicredit or BNP Paribas which is one of the largest banks in the world.

ATM, and don’t accept any ATM offer to convert the currency for you. Decline any conversion and let your own bank handle it; they will give you a much better rate.

ATMs are a cheap option. Airport exchange rates are trash
Good luck and don't be a prick to too many people
