Atlantis- or similar places

So, we are more of a go out west/national park type vacation people. I have never done a place like Atlantis but came into a little money recently and can do an extra trip this year and was wondering if we should try it out to throw my kids a bone and give them that experience. Are these places nice or trashy like Disney/cruises (jk, kinda)? What's the secret or other recommendations to pulling off this kind of trip?
