In a couple of days, I will have business in Juneau, AK. It is the off season for tourists and from what I can tell, there are no whales up there yet. I will be there for a week and will have several hours every afternoon to do what I would like.

Is there anything I need to see?
What places are good for eating and aren’t touristy?
Any good souvenirs that I need to bring home?

Basically, is there anything to see or do that I shouldn’t miss? I know the tourist season brings most of the entertainment but surely there is something to do.

Harv and Marv whale watching. I think the boats holds 6 or 8 max.

Take the whale watching boat that circles Shelter Island.

Go to Mendenhall Glacier. It may not be the most impressive glacier in the world but it may be the most impressive one you can drive to.

When walking around town go check out the little Russian Orthodox Church a few blocks up the hill.

There are whales, just no whale watching tours.

Some decent restaurants and breweries downtown. If you're staying downtown, you can walk to all of them.

Go to the Mendenhall Glacier. If you're into skiing, still plenty of that to do at the local ski mountain. Be careful if youre doing any trails, we have had warm weather and avalanches are a real danger.

I live here, if you need specifics I can help.

Roger, can regular groceries be purchased at respectable prices or are they outrageous? I’m talking basics like ground beef, spaghetti noodles, bread, milk etc.

Everything is pretty high right now but you'll find everything you need in the stores. I can't compare to lower 48 prices right now but we have been hit pretty hard by inflation.

What part of town are you staying? Grocery stores are just like everywhere else here, there's just one downtown though. Rest are in the Valley.

In my neighborhood. South Doughlas.

Closest grocery store would be Foodland, Downtown by the Federal Bldg. Lots of bars, etc. There's a nice beach in Douglas with some old mining ruins and stuff.

Couple of bars in Douglas. Island Pub has good Pizza. Lots of stuff downtown. If you're driving, its a five minute drive across the bridge. If not, bus service is every half hour.
