You're spot on, eSIMs are the way to go for European cruises. I used Maaltalk on a Mediterranean cruise last year and it worked perfectly in every port. Paid about £5 for 5GB over 7 days, which covered maps, restaurant searches, and uploading photos. It doesn't work at sea, but that's the same for any eSIM. Just switch to ship Wi-Fi for sea days. Much cheaper than carrier roaming.

Used holafly in Greece earlier this year. Was $75 for 22 days and unlimited data. Service was great. I don't mind paying extra to not have to change app settings on my phone, or pre download maps when I want to just wander around.
There might be cheaper plans. But it can't be any easier than HolaFly as it was simple as could be.

Currently in Eastern Europe and using Airalo. I didn’t get the unlimited since pretty much all the e-sims throttle you to nothing if you are on unlimited plan and exceed 2-3 gb per day. I got 20gb and they’ll let me use it all til it’s gone.
