Taking my kids to Universal, Disneyland, and the SD Zoo in May and we will be there 7 nights.
Trying to figure out the best area to stay in. We are only doing 2 days at Disney, 1 at Universal and one at the zoo. We are looking at several areas to stay in, including Huntington Beach, Laguna Beach, Dana Point, or we may possibly stay in Anaheim closer to Disneyland, although we may be leaning more away from that option since we are only there 2 out of 7 days.
We seem to find Laguna as being a bit pricey, but are there as nice areas nearby that might run a bit cheaper?

i think if you want cheaper, you will have to go into the inland suburbs like mission viejo or irvine.
huntington should be cheaper than laguna, and you might look at san clemente if you still want to stay in a beach town but pay less than laguna.

Thanks! I had a guy on another site tell me to look at Santa Ana close to the airport and Dana Point (as far as beach places go). I'll look at San Clemente also

Dana Point is a nice town and a good place to stay (I used to live there) but the beach is not great as there is a river (concrete ditch) that empties right at Doheny Beach. San Clemente Beach is nice and Laguna Nigel Thousand Steps Beach is really beautiful. Mission Viejo isnt a bad place just no beach but its very close to San Clemente. San Juan Capistrano is another place to look as its even closer to the beaches but right on I-5.If you have time, drive up to "Top of the World" in Laguna Beach. Its only about a 10 minute drive up from town and you can see up and down the coast and inland to the mountains. There is also a big park up there I used to mountainbike in.

We did that exact vacation last June. Stayed in Anaheim at the Fairfield across from Disneyland
Did a day in Huntington and dinner which was great
We also did a day in San Diego. You’re going to be using I5 for travel between DL and San Diego so id stay somewhere off it. Look at Irvine around the mall area called the Irvine Sprectrum Center. They have tons of hotels and restaurants where we ate one night and it’ll be cheaper than staying in a higher end beach town
From there it’s 78 miles to San Diego and 17 to Disneyland. Huntington shouldn’t be far either.
We also did a day in Universal and hiked the nearby Hollywood Sign which was awesome

yeah, i was just thinking mission viejo because it would be a bit cheaper than the beach towns. lots of old people and retirees, so it isn't a party town : )

aliso and wood canyons? that is a super fun area to ride and run trails.

Disney as a day trip is plenty. Anaheim is a bit of a rough neighborhood. There’s a sheraton resort by Legoland in Carlsbad that would probably be fun for the kids and affordable. I have stayed there and it’s very clean and quite large. Mission Bay is the place to go if you want a resort in SD proper. The Hyatt is nice. Maybe do half at Sheraton Carlsbad while you visit Disney and Safari Park. The other half is Mission Beach close to Balboa Park (SD Zoo).

We did 1.5 days at DL and 1 day at California Adventures and loved every minute. And that was before Star Wars land opened
Take your time and enjoy the two days. The weather will be perfect and California Adventure is very underrated.

Disneyland days are all consuming. Why not just stay there. The Grand Californian is an awesome hotel. Why get in your car to battle traffic with two kids after a full day in the park.

Nice hotel at reasonable rates about a 10 minute five to beach and right off the 405 is a Springhill Suites in Huntington Beach. It’s my first choice when I travel for business.

The drive is not to bad from LA to San Diego
Staying somewhere in between would probably be ideal
Just avoid peak traffic times in LA
Disneyland and San Diego Zoo are well worth it.
I would probably skip Universal.
There are so many things to do in California with kids that would make me not want to spend multiple days at theme parks.

we did everything but Universal. We stayed at the Candy Cane Inn in Anaheim (walking distance from Disney) and just took the amtrack to and back from san diego for the day. If you take the early train you get there when the zoo opens and the late train leaves around 30 minutes after the zoo closes.
