You can carry on and get through security with airplane bottles, but the flight attendants won't let you open it on the plane.

We ended up mixing our drinks in the airport and bringing them along with us for the flight.

It depends: you cannot get an unopened full sized bottle of liquor through TSA security, as the liquid volume is too large. BUT, if you purchase the alcohol (or any other liquids) after you've passed through security (like from a duty free shop), you can have it with you on the plane. But you cannot open it in-flight. If you opened it at the aiport and filled a flask, you'd probably not come to anyone's attention using a flask discreetly in your seat.

TL;DR can only have a liquid exceeding 100 ml if purchased after a security checkpoint. Liquids exceeding 100 ml must be in checked baggage, not carry on.

I watched a woman cuss and scream hysterically at TSA agents in Miami as she wasn't allowed to bring her huge bottle (looked like a gallon) of liquor through the security check after an international arrival. She had bought it in a duty free section of some foreign airport.

They told her, "Well, you can still check it." But of course, at that point, she had nothing to pack it in, as she had already re-checked her bags.

Woof.

Toughest one I saw was a ferry between Turkey and Greece. Woman buys liquor at duty free in Turkey and hops on boat. We pull up 45 minutes later in Rhodes and they confiscate it.

"I just bought it in duty free there"

Greek BP "Just because they let you buy it there doesn't mean it's legal when you come here"

Ouch.

Ever since a friend of mine had his bottle of Green Spot confiscated in Chicago, I know not to bring expensive booze puchased locally in Europe on the plane ride home if you switch to a domestic carrier here in the US.

No matter what the distillery or international carrier tells you in Europe.

It's not complicated: when you pick up your checked bags after your international arrival, you simply pack the liquor in your suitcase then, before you re-check your bag to your final destination in the US.

But you have to know to do this and remember to do it.

I’ve hauled home beaucoup booze and wine from international trips......you just need to put it in your checked bags. It is perfectly legal and won’t be confiscated. You just can’t have it in your hand baggage.

No distillery or winery is telling you that you can have it in a carry on bag....
