Flying into Shanghai...obviously plenty there to do. However, is it worth also taking the highspeed train to Beijing? Also, any side trips outside shanghai worth doing? Going in late May. Thanks!

I’d definitely take the high speed train to Beijing. Buy a business class seat for much more comfortable ride. It’s around a four and a half hour ride.
Leave Shanghai early and spend day walking through Forbidden City and surrounding area.
Beijing and Shanghai are pretty different so you’ll get a good mix of old and new.
I’ve heard the water towns outside Shanghai are interesting but never been. Might be worth checking out.
In Shanghai if you’re looking for a low key spot to get a drink in a cool area check out Bell Bar. Very nice people too

Shanghai Brewery was fun too but lots of expats

The high speed train is worth doing, just for the ride itself. The only one I've done there was Beijing to Tianjin. It was pretty fun, but I had missed out on the high speed trains in Japan previously.

The publicity images are just like reality, the premier seats are like first class airline seats or even better.
Nice looking cabin stewardesses (generally) selling eats, drinks, and reading matter.
Never done the Chinese version, but the Japanese bar is set high.

It looks like from what I've read elsewhere, Beijing is definitely worth the trek (perhaps spend more time there than in Shanghai). I just wish I had more time in the country

Wow. Never mind then. The train ride itself should have no influence on your decision. It was certainly not like that in China. No surprise though. Everything in Japan was much better IMO.

The overnight train from Beijing to Xian has a an Old World feeling in the lounge car. I expected to bump into Poirot. Our compartment contained couchettes, and there were two bathrooms. On one end was a western style (always had a line of Chinese), and on the other end was a Turkish style that never had a line (aim well!).
Highly recommend taking train to Beijing. You should have time to hit all of the top spots and maybe get in a bit of shopping at the Pearl Market (if that is your thing).
If you have a day to spare, book a private driver/cab to The Great Wall. 2 sections are close enough to Beijing that a day trip is all that is required. Mutianyu has a toboggan slide you can ride down after visiting The Great Wall (what a blast). Beware of a guide that just wants to hustle you on to a Silk Factory or to a section of the Great Wall other than the one you prefer to visit. Remain firm (politely) in what your want to do.
If you prefer to stick to Shanghai, the Fodors travel board will have tips for day trips from Shanghai.

Random bump, but going to hit up the hi-speed train between the 2 cities. So, not a ton of time in Beijing and Shanghai but I'll make the best of it. Maybe it just means getting back out there again!
I'm pumped for this trip
