Zmodo security cameras and DVR

We just moved into a house that has some zmodo cameras installed. We found the dvr for it in a random cabinet. It was not hooked up and there was no manual left with it, but I think it’s outdated because when I tried to look it up, there is hardly an info on it.
Can I buy a compatible dvr and hook it up to the existing cameras… or do I just get a whole new system??

Can you post a photo of the hookups on the recorder? Or a model number if you can find it.

The DVR model number is ZMD-DT-SBN4
The model number on the cameras is ZMD-CBH-DBS23NM
Someone told me a DVR with TVL would work, but I don’t even know why that is.

TVL means television lines, which is a spec for analog cameras/recorders. Your DVR and cameras are definitely analog. Do you know what specific problem you're having hooking yours up?
If you're looking to upgrade, unfortunately your options are going to be limited in the analog video world. Almost no one makes analog stuff anymore because IP cameras are just as cheap but the video quality is far better. If you want to go this route, you will need to replace your existing cables with ethernet cable. Hopefully your old cables are not stapled in and you can use them as pull strings when running the cat cable.
The user shawnlsu has helped a lot of folks out with this, or if you're on the west side of the river I can take a look.

We just don’t have a tv or monitor that can be hooked up via VGA, so I just honestly have no idea if it works or not. I may pick up a converter to hook it up to a tv to see if it even works before I try anything else. Unfortunately, the wiring is pretty hard to get to in the attic, so I was really hoping to avoid having to mess with it.
Thanks for your help. We’re in Livingston. Know anyone out this way you could recommend?

TD user shawnlsu is with Belle-Tech, they serve the BR area. Not sure exactly where their office is, I believe shawn is around Prairieville but I think they would come out your way.

You say it’s hard to get to, but can you see the wires? If they are lose and just laying across, wha korkstand was saying is you could use them to pull the new wires through if you were to upgrade the system. You would just need to tie the cables for the new camera to the wires connected to the old camera, then you would slowly fish it through.
