So I have a TP link and my internet drops about every 10-15 minutes. I am looking at either a new router with a WIFI extender or going to a mesh system.

Just completed a new shop/party barn about 60-80 feet from my house that will have a TV and Wifi lightbulbs I can control from the phone. Any of you guys have any solutions or suggestions as to how to ensure coverage to the new building? I did run coax to the building in the electrical conduit so putting another modem out there is a possibility.

You have the same problem as the thread from yesterday and I will recommend Ubiquiti products again as I typically do.

I would use the coax as a pull string to run two cat6 cables instead, UNLESS you mean there is electric in the same conduit in which case that is a code violation that is unsafe and will likely cause communication issues if not worse. Never put low and high volt together in the same conduit.

You don't want a second modem in the barn because that will be a second bill to pay every month and it won't be on the same network as your house and that's just fricky for many reasons. If you don't have a dedicated low volt conduit then your best bet will probably be to put a mesh unit in the house and another in the barn, and within strong coverage of each other. If being indoors doesn't work well, then I'd look into outdoor mesh units.

Ubiquiti has products to handle this whatever the case.

What router do you currently have?

Did you have a pull string installed in the conduit? If not I'd just use a wireless bridge to send network out there.

a wireless bridge
I've installed a lot of point to point wireless and I think 80' is too close for that. WiFi works plenty well at that distance in open air, and as a bonus you get excellent coverage outside between the buildings.

Perfect. I don't think the coax will serve a purpose, so I really would use it as a pull string to run 2 or 3 cat6 cables in there. Or if you still want the coax and don't have a real pull string, pull a string with the cat6 runs and then use it to pull the coax back through.

After that you can just get a decent router in the house, plug your cat6 into it then put a cheap plain wifi AP (with PoE injector) or plug-in mesh unit (if you go that route) in the barn for perfect wifi out there.

You need to figure out the wifi issue now before doing anything else. Whatever is causing your problems now (if external interference) could very well cause same problems with new router. That router should have no WiFi issues when everything is setup properly.

It has been driving me crazy. I am going to do a complete reset by removing the network and putting the router back to factory default.

Do all wifi clients drop connection at the same time? are you having the dropouts on both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz or just one of them?

Do just have a single access point or multiple?

Make sure you update to the latest firmware as well.

Dropping both, but 5g rarely shows up at all. Currently have WIFI extender, but not sure that is considered and access point. If not, then just one.

You may have interference locally. Does the app for the router allow you to pick the wifi channels?

Do you have seamless roaming enabled?

Is the extender also TP-link or some other brand?

There's apps you get for your phone to check this. I use one called "network scanner". This will show you all the wifi signals and their power. You can adjust your wi-fi to limit interference.

The only time I've run across interference so bad that it caused the wifi to be unusable, it wasn't a wifi signal at all. It was a nearby radio tower blanketing the property with 2.4ghz and wifi scanner apps don't identify or even see it. I was only able to detect it with my TinySA.

Anyway, OP says both 2.4 and 5ghz are dropping, so I doubt interference is to blame. Cheap routers going to shite after a couple years is pretty typical in my experience.

I've done distance installs like this a few times for my customers
Each situation unique given their needs and the barriers at the persons property.

Could you let me know which TP-Link model you’re using? I’m curious about the speeds and signal strength you’re getting just outside your home. If you’re comfortable sharing your email, I can send you a message. I might have some extra devices that I could give you if you need them.

So after a complete reset this morning I was running at 337 Mbps. Come home after playing golf and now it has dropped to 5 Mbps. No change and not more load on the system.

Is that happening on both wired and wireless connections?
