Wireless router for AT&T DSL service

An older relative has AT&T (Bellsouth) DSL for internet. They now want wifi in the house.
Can they use any aftermarket wifi router, or do they have to get/rent one from AT&T?
I assume they can use their own, but I've never had DSL and want to make sure.
Thanks for any knowledge or advice you can share on the issue.

if what they have is a modem/router combo - it's easier to just add a wireless access point.

Yes, they should be able to use any wifi router. The modem is all that matters when it comes to what kind of service you have.

Being out in middle of nowhere, I'm on AT&T DSL as my best option (dial-up and satellite only others I have). Another 50 yards further down the road and even DSL would not be available.
I have the black Westell modem AT&T provides and simple Belkin dual band router from Wal Mart hooked up to it pretty much in the center of the house. I get coverage for the whole house and even out in the yard on WiFi this way.
I still have a hardwire for my desktop PC for online gaming though to get maximum stability and squeeze out a couple of bits/sec from that copper wire connection.

quote:Yes can and absolutely should use their own router. They need to purchase a separate modem. I have DSL service, and the combos are absolute garbage. The wifi drops constantly. I have a Netgear from Walmart that was about 100 or so dollars and it's been fine. Got a Dlink modem from Bestbuy.

Cant stress enough that the combo router/modems are garbage.
