That's what they do.

Market defining device. Refine. Refine. Refine. Refine. Refine. Refine. Refine. Repeat.

The Refining parts are boring, but necessary.

It's funny to me that the jailbreak community is discredited by many, but Apple didn't have a problem with using those ideas for its primary upgrades in iOS4 and 5. Why did it take Apple so long to allow apps to be added to folders or more than 4 docked apps at the bottom or wallpaper? All were jailbreak features LONG before Apple stole them.

not to mention how after the juice was wrung out of that turnip, they actively broke jailbreak and in fact release minor . upgrades to the OS now specifically to patch jailbreak workarounds.

a giant frick YOU to the creative hackers who actually loved the iphone enough to spend countless hours finding ways to make it work better.

I don't really disagree with what you wrote. It's obvious they're stretched pretty thin with the ambitious release schedule they'e on. They need to clean things up some or dial it back.

But the thread is also about innovation. And innovation for the sake of innovation is useless and distracting from better tasks at hand. Did Google innovate with Glass? Microsoft with the Surface table?
Yeah. So what? What did it get them? A reputation for releasing dead end products?

Here's what Jobs had to say on innovation.
quote:

“The hardest thing when you think about focusing – you think focusing is about saying ‘Yes.’ No. Focusing is about saying ’No.’ And when you say ’No,’ you piss off people.”
Always remember that you have limits, and when it comes down to deciding what you can do and what you can’t, choose what’s most important to you. Work hard and do as much you can in your job but also mind your limits and don’t let yourself get burnt out for nothing.

Apple has a jillion patents. But they aren't going to waste time and resources putting out ersatz toys that are not ready for prime time. They didn't become one of the world's most successful companies by making stupid move after stupid move solely for the sake of being called innovative.

In fact the only true flop I can remember in recent history is the Apple home speaker system "Boombox". I don't even remember what it was called. But it was like $350 for a big plastic portable dual speaker system. I think it was off the Apple store shelves in less than 6 months and I'm damn glad I didn't shell out for one.
