What's the feeling about projectors these days?

I have my TV in my office/family room/music room or whatever you want to call it in an awkward location. There aren't many options with the way the room has been designed/decorated. It is however setup perfectly for a ceiling mounted projector and a retractable screen. Projectors just seem like a fad from over a decade ago that never really took off. So I really don't know anything about them. I realize the quality probably isn't near what a normal TV would and I'm ok with that.

Really depends on how much $$$$ you want to spend. A really good 20 grand projector will make you regular HD TV look like cr*p.
The trend I am seeing now is laser units. Just put one in at a business. Picture is crystal clear, very little cool down time and almost instant on. No bulbs to replace and the lumens stay constant over the life of the laser unit. Also you do get total black, hard to do with a regular light source. Granted this was not a 20 grand one, but for 4 grand it would be totally acceptable in my house. Time will tell if the laser unit lasts the 20,000 hours they claim. If it does, it will be time for a new projector by then anyway. They could almost buy another projector for what they would have saved on bulbs over the life of the unit.

Not a fad. A good set up is just expensive.

Is it even worth it for like a $600 budget? $50 screen and $550 projector? This is not my main TV watching location. I have a nice 65" in the living room where we mostly watch.

Depends on what projector you are talking about and what your expectations are for the setup.

I have a projector that I bought for $300 that I use for night time sports watching outdoors and it has been great... Don't expect to watch anything during the day or without a pitch black room, but you can definitely get away with a lower end projector for occasional watching.

A good projector is awesome. But they aren't very practical.

I've got a Sony native 4k projector paired with a 135 inch Stewart screen in a room that I've got complete control over lighting.
Not sure where you are getting the idea that's it's a dying fad from. I think they're much more popular now then they were 15 years ago.
The projector's picture quality is amazing and watching a movie in my media room is 10 times more enjoyable than watching one on my 65 inch OLED in the living room.
