Yeah, you'll need a dedicated GPU for the latter two it seems. Look for something with a GTX 940M minimum. Just some quick filters on Newegg produces these as example of good configurations:
LINK (cheap, already comes with SSD)
LINK (better graphics, buy your own SSD, still come out under $1000)
LINK (same graphics as above, already has SSD).
Here are the search results: LINK (i3/i5/i7, within your budget and size range, and dedicated card, new)

about the same as the last two I linked in terms of specs but has an IPS display. Seems to be a few pounds heavier and have shorter battery life, so as long as you're OK with that.

hey how would playing games over a remote destop connect? I have a HTPC in my closet that was build for a gaming computer 4 years ago. Could i play heavy cpu/gpu hogging games over remote desktop connect on a basic laptop from the comfort of my couch?

That computer went for $510; $537 with shipping... I stopped at $475.

Somebody got a decent deal assuming it's in perfect working order.

Try Steam In-Home streaming. I haven't tried remote gaming but there are various ways to do it.
