Spotify on iPhone? Negative.

Amazon Instant? Negative.

Consistent device recognition/casting? Negative.

I'm about to mothball this crap for a Roku Streaming Stick.

Here's the app list in case you weren't aware it existed. I'm not a big ChromeCast fan, but it has its merits.

I will say, if you're complaining about Amazon Instant and Spotify, you maybe should have done a little more research first- people who prefer Amazon Instant to Netflix and/or Hulu Plus and Spotify to Pandora are going to have a subpar experience, but it's right there on their list of apps page. What I disliked for a while was the responsiveness of the controls on the app and lack of physical remote. It has improved since then and is bearable. I still would prefer a physical remote, though.

But if those apps don't cut it for you, look at the selection on Amazon FireTV stick or Roku stick. The Firetv stick is slightly newer than the Roku streaming stick, but they're both launched recently enough that neither is what I would call "getting old."

When I first got it, it was the only device of its kind on the market. See no reason whg anyone would purchase it now with the other options around.

It's cheap as frick and you can stream anything from your laptop to your tv. I love it. I stream all sports and movies that I cant find on cable.

Mine works flawlessly. I use it from my laptop, desktop, Nexus 6, and wife's iPhone. It works with everything I've attempted to use it for (except XBMC/Kodi, as I haven't attempted the instructions for that yet). I stream Netflix, Youtube, HBOgo, kids channels/app, and my entire media library from Plex. Using my devices as the remote is 100000x better than a regular remote. The only con would be its lack of official Amazon Instant video support. But there's the workaround of casting it from a Chrome tab. Haven't tested the quality of that though.

When I can't get the Saints games locally here in Knoxville I'll fire up firstrowsports and shoot that stream to the TV. The Chromecast is worth the price just for that.

I'll also cast a tab and use the Spotify web player and stream that to the TV.

25 bucks to cast anything you want. Open a tab and cast amazon instant. You have to change amazon instant to flash.

I figured mirroring flash over wifi would produce less than desirable results, especially at any sort of "watchable" resolution.

I use mine for streaming showbox app, screen casting apps without native chromecast support on supported devices (Nexus devices, Note 3, etc), etc

Here's a longer way to say no, just to give you some reasoning behind it:

First, do you mean without a wireless router, or with another device that doesn't have WiFi? Or are you wondering if the Chromecast can be connected via ethernet?

If you're asking whether it can use ethernet, no it cannot.

As for wifi, it's the only way the Chromecast can communicate with the outside world. There's nothing on the chromecast itself that allows it to serve as a standalone media player of local files. It relies completely on connecting to your network and/or the Internet. Without a wifi connection, the Chromecast is like a locked car with no gas.

There is a setting on the Chromecast that enables "guest" mode, where someone near your chromecast can cast from their phone without actually connecting to the home router. But, this setting relies on the chromecast's wifi as well as the user device's wifi. And this guest setting is disabled by default, and would require a chromecast connected to the same network as your phone via wifi in order to enable the guest feature. And even then, the Chromecast needs an internet connection unless you're casting local content, and wifi is the only way it gets an internet connection.
