Does anyone have a virtual reality system? I am looking into purchasing a system and have no idea where to start other than Google.
If you have any experience I'd appreciate any feedback or advice. Thanks!

I'd look at the Oculus Quest 2 for a good starting point.

Be aware you need a Facebook account now. I have a original rift and a quest. They are cheaper than the HTC Vive but I'm not a fan of the required account now. It wasn't that way when I first got it.

Oculus Quest 2 or Meta Quest or whatever the hell they are calling it is currently the best you can get. There are some better systems out there that have more capabilities but those are primarily PC based systems where you will have to be tethered to the PC in some way, whether directly or indirectly. The Oculus is totally sell contained. You can throw it (carefully) in a backpack and take it anywhere you go. There are tons of accessories, both OEM and aftermarket for it, relatively cheap. You can plug in a cheap battery back to it and velcro it to the side of the headset if you are going to be using for hours and hours, otherwise a full charge is good enough for a couple of hours of uninterrupted play. I have yet to need to change the batteries on the hand units. Getting all that out the way, the system is mind blowing. The realism is hard to describe. Walking a plank off the top of a skyscraper will make you lose your shite if you are afraid of heights such as in the app/game "The Climb". Crashland is a FPS that on its own if it were setup as a basic console game would be good to above average but you make it VR and the result is amazing. Walking Dead is creepy AF. Just looking down at the detail in your hands when you hold them in front of your face is trippy AF. There is a fishing game called Bait that seems kind of stupid at first but I've spent hours upon hours fishing off a virtual dock. Its a mix between cartoonish and super realistic, depending on what you are looking at. I don't get the Beat Saber craze everyone loves on this thing but that is probably more due to my uncoordinated, bad dancing skills. I probably have a couple dozen games, many were free, most I paid for. I've only played 3 or 4 so far. Just don't have time to use it most of the time. Here is another bonus. Games are super cheap. Not many expensive games and the expensive ones are maybe 30 bucks. Many are under 20 bucks. Highly recommend this system. Haven't touched my other 3 game consoles since. At the time I purchased it, a Facebook account was mandatory and you cannot create a burner account for it because they will know via IP or something like that and will ban your Quest and make it a doorstop. Supposedly that is no longer a requirement. Anyway it isn't an issue for as I don't really use Facebook much anyway.

Lol, it is the best self contained system, but it is not even close to the best VR experience. Cheap build quality, shitastic mic, comfort isn’t the best just to name a few of issues with it. Comfort can be solved by doing some modding to it, but overall if you want to be serious about VR, something more like an Index is a better complete experience if you are willing to pay the money to make it worth it.

Quest is a good beginner setup.

Yeah, poorly worded on my part. Its the best bang for your your buck system. The Index Is probably the best VR system, but it is 1000 dollars AND you are tethered to a computer. That's assuming you have a PC that can run the apps and games that will make the investment worth the expenditure. If you don't, then add another 2500 bucks to that first 1000 bucks. I myself have a PC that can run Index stuff, and I can afford the system but if I spend that kind of money I want it to be portable so I can take it anywhere I want. But most people cannot shell out 1000 bucks or 3500 for that matter. But in the Oculus you have a system that can be had for 300 bucks that gets you a system that has the following features:

* its portable so you can take anywhere (family getogether, party, ANYWHERE)

* graphics are really good - not Index good but really good as in most will not miss the difference

* you have a really good catalog of games for cheap$$

* battery longevity makes the whole tethered advantage completely moot

* games and apps are relatively cheap

* its cheap compared to the Index or its closest viable competitors

* affordable aftermarket accessories that improve the already good OEM experience

* the whole uncomfortable headset thing is a non issue. Could it be better? Sure but its not worth spending 50 bucks or 100 bucks to improve it. OEM is really good.

* you have the option to tether the Oculus to your PC to expand the game catalog and boost the graphics to near Index level.

I think this is a system that blows away the current competition.
As for your cons

* I mentioned the aftermarket stuff you can buy because its there for anyone that wants more however, the only accessories I've invested in is the rubber protective cover for the headset and the rubber covers for the hand units because the extra grip is helpful when playing FPS games.

* I already had a battery pack to use with the Oculus but I've never had to use it because I never have longer that a couple of hours to play because work and family.

Seriously, I tried to hate this thing because I hate Facebook but its currently the only game in town.

I got my Quest 2 in last Friday. I bought a boxing game and I like it. I'm sore as frick though. I'm completely out of shape so at least I'll get back in some sort of shape from playing it hahaha.

I do think it's a pretty neat system for a beginner. My only complaint is that it won't display directly to my ROKU tv without going through my Iphone then screen mirroring to the TV and the display loses a massive amount of detail doing that. I need to figure out a better way to project to the tv. So if you folks have suggestions then please let me know.

I think I'm going to try the Walking Dead game. Can you actually "walk" through the game?

This is why it is a non issue for you, you don't play it with any length. I think it is pretty much required to upgrade to something like the Vive Deluxe Audio strap because of this, but it is still not near the comfort of say the Index or Vive Pro.

Once you start playing the higher end games, it's hard to go back to the shitty low graphic Quest games as well.

I do agree it is a great entry level device to get people to get the high end computer and high in VR setup. I kinda have a VR addiction though, have had a DK1, Vive, Vive Pro, Index, Quest, and Quest 2.
