Using your own modem/router with VOIP service

My dad switched over to VOIP for their house phone. I’d set him up with his own modem/router combo to save money each month and the rental router couldn’t serve our whole house effectively. Well now that router is useless for his service because he has VOIP phones.
Currently he’s using a new rental combo unit and we’re back to having crappy wifi service on the fringes of the house.
Is there a way to use my own router and modem with Xfinity VOIP services?

You have two options.
1) You can place the xfinity gateway in bypass mode and use your own router but I'm not 100% sure what your VoIP setup is. Do you use the phone jacks on the gateway? Is there a VoIP gateway devices? Is your VoIP service Xfinity?
2) The guaranteed-to-work option is disable the wifi only on the Xfinity gateway and setup your wifi router as an access point and not a router. Then your personal router can provide wifi.

Drop Xfinity and get Ooma. You can use your own router with Ooma.
